#2 Villanova (34-5) vs. #1 North Carolina (33-6) (9pm ET Monday, TBS)
On Saturday, the Villanova Wildcats unleashed a tenacious D and a white-hot shooting hand that culminated in the biggest blowout in NCAA Final Four history. The ‘Cats defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 95-51, hitting 71% from the floor, including 61% from three-point land, while junior guard Josh Hart led all scorers with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting. As a team, Villanova was so hot of the eight guys who hoisted a shot, only one of them, Darryl Reynolds, hit on less than 60%, and to be fair, he only missed on his lone attempt.

Villanova’s defensive effort was equally suffocating as they held the Sooners to a season-low 55 points (their previous low had been 63) and a... Read More

#10 Syracuse Orangemen (22-13) vs. #1 Virginia Cavaliers (29-7) (6:09pm ET, TBS)

Trailing by one with 23 seconds to play, the Syracuse Orangemen’s Michael Gbinije retrieved the block of his own layup, making good on his second chance to give Syracuse its first lead in nearly 10 minutes on their way to a 63-60 victory over Gonzaga. Gbinije led the Orangemen in scoring 20 (albeit on eight-of-23 shooting), adding four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

Virginia went into halftime against the Iowa State Cyclones with a 14 point lead and never looked back, despite a 30-point night from ISU’s Georges Niang by dominating the boards (33-24) and shooting 56% from the floor. The Cavs’ Anthony Gill led the team in scoring with 23 points on... Read More

March Madness on Sling: Second Round Day 2

Mar 19, 2016 by Scott Ross

March Madness got Madder still on Friday. A day after two #11 seeds and two #12 seeds advanced, we saw a #15-, #13-, #11- and #10-seed advance. According to ESPN, after Friday’s action, there were just 6 perfect brackets, out of some 13 million. By the time you read this, that number could well have fallen to zero.

#15 Middle Tennessee (25-9, 13-5 CUSA) @ #10 Syracuse (20-13, 9-9 ACC) (6:10pm ET Sunday, TNT) The Blue Raiders shocked the world Friday, beating Michigan State 90-81, becoming just the eighth 15-seed to advance to the second round. “We didn’t guard them good, but man, they made some shots,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said afterward. Middle Tennessee hit 55.9% of their shots, in fact, including 11 of 19 from three-point land,... Read More

Another day, another 12 hours of wall-to-wall coverage of the Big Dance. While every game could arguably be called a “big game,” there are a few we’ve got our eye.

Just a heads up, Cal’s leading scorer, Tyrone Wallace (15.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 4.4 apg), broke his non-shooting hand during practice Wednesday, the same hand he broke in January, causing him to miss five games, during which the Bears went 3-2.

#10 VCU (24-10, 14-4 A-10) @ #7 Oregon State (19-12, 9-9 Pac-12) (1:30pm ET Friday, TNT)

Crusaders @ Jaguars (6:40pm ET Wednesday, truTV)
The Holy Cross Crusaders had a miserable season, going 14-19 overall and just 5-13 in Patriot Conference play. But when the chips were down, the Crusaders stepped up, sweeping four conference tourney games, including wins over the number one, two and four-seeded teams. In the final against Lehigh, the Crusaders were outrebounded 34-23, but Lehigh hit just 38% from the floor. This is Holy Cross’ first NCAA appearance since 2007 and their 13th overall. They’ve gone 7-12 in tournament play and won it all in 1947.

It’s the final regular season game of the year for two of the most storied teams in college basketball: the Tar Heels roll down Tobacco Road to confront the Cameron Crazies and the Blue Devils.

The Heels have struggled of late, losing four of their last nine games, but, on Monday, they defeated Syracuse 75-70 as coach Roy Williams started an all-senior lineup for the team’s final home game. The senior bench players soon gave way to the younger starters, however, creating an upside-down box score that showed the UNC subs scoring 53 points. The win lifted Kansas’ record to 23-4 overall, which helped them maintain their #2 ranking, bring their conference record to 11-3, and secure their position atop the Big 12. But, it was a tough night for Perry Ellis, the Jayhawks’ best player, as he suffered a cut behind his ear that required 12 stitches, and Kansas State used his absence to close within four points. The Devils came out on top 74-73, thanks in large part to a last-second block of a Joel Berry jumper by Derryck Thornton. The Blue Devils got it done with almost zero help from their depleted bench as five guys played all but 14 minutes and scored all 74 points, while the ‘Heels torpedoed their own cause by making just 1 of 13 3-point attempts. Kentucky’s record-setting destruction of West Virginia makes it easy to forget there are other teams in the Sweet 16.

Oh, but there are other teams. Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Arizona made that clear last night, and tonight Duke—hey, remember them?—will have a chance against Utah to put its stamp on things. As will a few other talents squads.

But does even mentioning teams other than Kentucky feel like whistling past a graveyard? Here’s a warning from the Wildcats’ latest victim:

“They were what I thought they were,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said after the 78-39 blowout. “That’s the best defensive team I think that I’ve ever coached against. And when they’re making shots, there’s nobody going to beat them.”

After getting his first-ever teleplay assignment and turning in the devastating Mike-centric “Five-O,” Gordon Smith was immediately given another episode of Better Call Saul to write: tonight’s “RICO,” which given the show’s subject matter could refer to either a Hispanic male or the federal anti-racketeering statute. Either way, it ought to be worth tuning in for. (10pm Monday, AMC)

After five full seasons of build-up, backstabbing, and fake-outs, the identity of the mysterious “A” will finally be revealed on tonight’s season finale of Pretty Little Liars. SPOILER ALERT: It’s Keyser Soze. (8pm Tuesday, ABC Family)

But don’t feel too sorry for the Jaspers' RaShawn Stores, no matter what the outcome. Stores, a senior point guard and team captain, has had a storybook career, and this profile in the New York Times is worth reading.

Stores walked on at Manhattan and won over Coach Steve Masiello, who understood very well what Stores was trying to accomplish. Masiello had walked on at Kentucky when he was a player.

“He means everything,” Masiello told the Times. “He’s an extension of me on the court.... Read More

This might be the only question that matters. We should have saved it for last.

3) Is North Carolina State, despite coming of a loss to Duke on Thursday, the team most likely to shock the nation by upsetting a one or two seed in the second round?

The answer is no because if you know anything at all about... Read More
