Selection Sunday & 8 Questions for the NCAA Tournament

Mar 13, 2015 by Robb Todd

The field will be set Sunday and the mayhem—dare we call it “madness”?— will begin Tuesday. But a lot of the wagering has already begun, surely only where it’s legal.

Did you know that about $9 billion is bet on the NCAA men’s basketball tournament?

That was question No. 1. Here are a few more.

2) Can anyone beat Kentucky?

This might be the only question that matters. We should have saved it for last.

3) Is North Carolina State, despite coming of a loss to Duke on Thursday, the team most likely to shock the nation by upsetting a one or two seed in the second round?

The answer is no because if you know anything at all about the Wolfpack then you know they’re built to do exactly that–so it shouldn’t be a shock. Regardless of what happened against the Blue Devils, who lost to the Wolfpack earlier in the season, N.C. State is a team poised to upset a top seed. Don’t believe it? Ask CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein. Or Yahoo’s Pat Forde. Or anyone in Raleigh, N.C.

4) Do conference tournament surprises carry over into the NCAA bracket?

Waring. Clicking the link above will lead you to a lot of math.

5) Does Murray State deserve to be in even though they lost to Belmont in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament? FOX Sport’s Reid Forgrave says …

Kind of makes the regular season seem unimportant, doesn’t it?

6) Is being the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region the worst possible seed?

Huh?

7) Speaking of $9 billion dollars, should anyone be worried that four conferences held their tournaments in Las Vegas?

More money is bet on the tournament than on the Super Bowl.

8) Which ESPN expert do you think picked the correct Final Four and champion—before the season started?

Not too many people believed in ‘Nova before the season began, did they?
