Uruguay vs. Colombia Highlights Tuesday’s CONMEBOL WC Qualifying
Uruguay vs. Colombia (6:55pm ET, beIN Español)
Both sides are coming off wins in their World Cup qualifying openers, with Colombia having beat Peru 2-0 and Uruguay beating Bolivia by the same scoreline.
But Colombia will have to make do without their star man, James Rodriguez, with the Real Madrid midfielder having picked up a thigh injury last month.
Uruguay will also be without its key players with Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez both ruled out by injury. Uruguay will also be without coach Oscar Tabarez who is still serving a touchline ban from the Copa America.
History is not necessarily on Colombia’s side. The only time they’ve won previously at the Estadio Centenario was 42 years ago when they beat Uruguay 1-0 ahead of the 1974 World Cup in West Germany.
Argentina vs. Paraguay (8:55pm ET Tuesday, beIN Español)
After a surprise loss to Ecuador in their World Cup opener, Argentina will be looking to bounce back quickly against Paraguay. But Argentina remain without their captain, Lionel Messi who is still sidelined by the knee ligament injury that ruled him out of the opener against Ecuador.
Tata Martino’s side was dealt a further blow when striker Sergio Aguero went off with a hamstring injury against Ecuador.
Paraguay fared better in their opener, notching a 1-0 win over Venezuela. However if history is anything to go by, coach Ramon Diaz’s men will have their work cut out for them.
Paraguay have failed to win their last five matches against Argentina. Having met twice in this summer’s Copa America, they drew 2-2 in the group stage before suffering a 6-1 destruction in the semi-finals.
Chile vs. Peru (10pm ET, beIN, beIN Español)
It’s been a good year for Chile. Fresh from winning their first Copa America on home soil this summer, they continued their good run of form with a 2-0 win over Brazil in their qualifying opener last week.
Chile will have both its star men, Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal available for the clash at the Estadio Nacional on Tuesday. Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli will also be looking to Eduardo Vargas, with the Hoffenheim striker having scored four goals in his last two meeting against Peru.
Hosts Peru meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back from their 2-0 loss to Colombia last week. Peru made a good account of themselves at the Copa America, finishing third. A result against Chile would be a first step towards qualifying for their first World Cup since 1982.
History is not on their side, however, with the Peruvians having lost 10 out of their last 11 encounters with Chile.
Venezuela vs. Brazil (8:55pm ET, beIN Español)
After suffering a loss to Chile in their opener, perennial favorites Brazil welcome Venezuela to the Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza Tuesday.
Like Argentina, Brazil will be without their talisman. Neymar is still serving out the final game of the suspension he was hit with at the Copa America.
Venezuela also lost its opener, going down 1-0 to Paraguay. Neymar or no Neymar, Venezuela on paper should be easy pickings for the five-time world champions. However this is a Brazil side that has shown itself prone to erratic performances, having seemingly not yet recovered psychologically from the 7-1 loss to Germany at the 2014 World Cup.
With defensive lynchpin David Luiz also set to miss the match, having gone off in the first half against Chile with a knee injury, Venezuela might just fancy their chances.
Bolivia vs. Ecuador (4:50pm ET, beIN)
After pulling off a shock upset over World Cup finalist, Argentina, Ecuador will go into Tuesday’s clash with Bolivia high on confidence.
Bolivia meanwhile, will be looking to pick themselves up after losing to Uruguay at home last week.
The last time these two met was in June at the Copa America. In that match Bolivia ran out 3-2 winners.
