Boston Red Sox (Rodriguez 2-4, 5.91) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (Hill 9-3, 2.25)
4:05pm ET on FS1

On June 27, Eduardo Rodriguez endured one of the worst starts in all of baseball in 2016, giving up 9 runs on 11 hits in 2 ⅔ innings. Since then, however, he’s made 4 starts, going 24 innings with a 2.63 ERA. The new found success is partly attributable to a 30-point drop in his BABIP, and, more importantly, a steep drop in his home run rate, which has fallen from 2.8/9IP to 1.125 since – that’ll do wonders for your ERA. Having lost 10 of their last 14, the Red Sox awoke Friday to find themselves at 59-48, in 3rd place in the AL East, 2 games out of 1st and with just a half-game lead in the Wild Card race. The offense has been limping of late, so they called up stud outfield prospect Andrew Benintendi, who got two hits in his big league debut, a 3-1 loss to the Mariners, but what this team really needs is some starting pitching.

To give you an idea of just how badly battered the Dodgers starting rotation is, they just traded for a starting pitcher on the the DL – Rich Hill, formerly of the A’s. Hill was pulled from his last start, on July 17, before throwing a single pitch, the victim of a blister on his finger. Hill threw a 50-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and says he’s fine. Having just endured a 3-game span during which their starters went a grand total of 7 ⅓ innings, the Dodgers’ pen is grossly overworked, they really need Hill to step it up. The Dodgers came into this series at 60-48, 2 games back of the Giants in the NL West, but with a 3-game lead in the Wild Card race.
