Yesterday in baseball, the Cubs enjoyed a 5-4 walkoff win over the Marlins, scoring 3 in the 9th on a wild pitch, intentional walk and another wild pitch; Yangervis Solarte homered, doubled and singled, scored 4 runs, and drove in 3 more as the Padres pounded the Brewers 12-3; Max Scherzer fanned 11 over 8 innings as the Nationals beat the Diamondbacks 8-3; Mark Teixeira hit a 3-run homer, walked twice, was hit by a pitch, scored 3 runs and helped turn 3 double plays in the Yankees’ 9-5 defeat of the Mets; Kevin Gausman went 7, surrendering just 2 runs on 7 hits and a walk, while striking out 7, to lead the Orioles past the Ranger 3-2; Maikel Franco’s RBI single in the 8th tied the game, and his single in the bottom of the 12th gave the Phillies a 5-4 win against the Giants; Joe Mauer had a triple, 2 doubles and a single, drove in 4 runs, and scored a pair to lead the Twins’ 13-5 pounding of the Indians; Michael Fulmer (6 ⅔ IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 SO) outdueled Chris Sale (8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 10 SO) as the Tigers squeaked past the White Sox 2-1; the Pirates jumped out to a 4-run lead in the 1st, but couldn’t make it stand up, as 7 Braves scored at least 1 run en route to an 8-4 win; Stephen Piscotty’s 5th-inning homer proved to be the difference in the Cardinals’ 5-4 victory over the Reds; The Rays scored 4 in the 1st and never looked back, beating the Royals 12-0, behind homers from Steven Souza Jr., Brad Miller, and Kevin Kiermaier; Marco Estrada pitched 7 innings of 1-run ball in the Blue Jays 3-1 win over the Astros; Carlos Gonzalez hit 2 of his team’s 5 home runs as the Rockies beat up on the Dodgers 12-2; Albert Pujols launched a 2-run homer to give the Angels an 8-6 walkoff win over the A’s; Hisashi Iwakuma handcuffed the Red Sox for 7 ⅓ scoreless innings as the Mariners won 3-1.
