Ornery on his best day, Madison Bumgarner must be particularly unpleasant to be around right now as he’s coming off the seventh-worst start of his career, according to Game Score, and his worst since April of last year. On Tuesday, against the Phillies, MadBum lasted just 5+ innings, coughing up 8 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits – 2 homers – and 2 walks in a 13-8 loss, though he did draw a walk that day, raising his OBP to .258. The Giants are just 2-7 in his last 9 starts, despite his posting a 2.77 ERA, as the offense has scored 2 or fewer runs 5 times. Just six weeks ago, the Giants had an 8-game lead in the NL West, but at 62-46 on Friday that lead was down to just 2 games.
After spending 2015 in the purgatory of long relief/spot starter, Tanner Roark is enjoying a pretty good, bounce-back season, finding himself in the top 10 in WAR, Wins, IP, Home Runs per 9, and HBPs – coincidence? Roark most recently went 6 ⅓ against the D’backs, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits – 2 homers – and fanning 6 en route to an 11-6 victory. The Nats are in the driver’s seat in the NL East coming into the weekend with a 7 lead over the Marlins. Washington addressed their major weakness ahead of the trade deadline by picking up close Mark Melancon from the Pirates, who will hopefully take a load of Jonathan Papelbon, who last week in consecutive outings gave up a total of 7 runs while recording 2 outs.
