Simona Halep (ROU) [5] v Angelique Kerber (GER) [4], QF
The #5 ranked women’s player in the world, Simona Halep overcame a tough first-set loss to Madison Keys to win 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-3 in just under 2 hours to reach the quarterfinals, as Keys struggled with a bum achilles, and 48 unforced errors. This is Halep’s fifth Wimbledon, and the first time she’s made it past the first round, as well as the first time she’s made it past the second round in any of her 15 Grand Slam appearances.
Angelique Kerber, ranked 4th in the world, had a much easier go of it, dispensing with Misaki Doi in straight sets 6-3 6-1, a less stressful victory than the 6-7 7-6 6-3 win she earned over Doi en route to winning the Australian Open in January. This will be the fifth time Halep and Kerber have faced each other, with Halep winning three times, though Kerber won their last meeting, at the Federation Cup in April. They have never before played on grass.
Serena Williams (USA) [1] v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) [21], QF
After winning a tough 7-5 first set against old foe Svetlana Kuznetsova, Serena Williams won the second set 6-0 to advance to her eighth consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinals, and 12th in 17 Wimbledon appearances. Williams was just too much for Kuznetsova, hammering 14 aces and hitting 43 winners.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, ranked 23rd in the world, beat American Coco Vandeweghe 6-3 6-3 to advance to her first Wimbledon quarterfinal in 10 tries, and her first Grand Slam quarterfinals since the 2011 US Open. Serena is undefeated in five previous matches against Pavlyuchenkova, most recently beating her 6-1 6-3 at Rome in 2015.
Radek Stepanek (CZE) [14] & Nenad Zimonjic (SRB) [14] vs. Bob Bryan (USA) [2] & Mike Bryan (USA) [2], 3rd Round
Radek Stepanek and Nened Zimonjic defeated Dusan Lajovic and Viktor Troicki 7-6 6-7 10-8, despite the losers having 23-4 advantage on aces. This is Stepanek’s 9th Wimbledon with a partner, twice making it to the semis, while Zimonjic has been here 17 times before, winning the Men’s Doubles title in 2008 and 2009, and making the quarterfinals each of the previous three years.
Twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan are one of the great doubles duos of all time, having won 16 Grand Slam titles together, including three times at Wimbledon. They made quick work of Malek Jaziri and Lukas Rosol, winning 6-3 6-4 in just 55 minutes.
