An already tough Pirates season took another big blow when promising starter Jameson Taillon was scratched from this game and put on the DL with a sore shoulder. In his place will be Steven Brault, a 24-year-old lefty who’ll be making his Major League debut. In 35 innings Brault has giving up 13 runs on 35 hits and 15 walks, while striking out 44, with a 2.57 ERA.
Mike Leake’s first six starts no doubt had Cardinals fans wondering why on Earth John Lackey was allowed to leave town. Through May 4, Leake was 0-3 with a 6.03 ERA. Mercifully he’s been much better since then, pitching 63 ⅔ with a 3.11 ERA, and 5.125 SO/BB. His last start was a 7-inning, 3-run effort in a 4-2 loss to the World Champion Royals.
