The rains fell, the clouds parted and the grounds crew squeegeed, leaving soft fairways and forgiving greens in their wake, setting the stage for a high-scoring day of golf. When it was over, Robert Streb had shot a 7-under 63 to pull into a tie atop the leaderboard with Round 1 leader Jimmie Walker at -9.

Streb, who has just one tour victory on his resume, shot four birdies on both the front and back nine, stumbling only on the 16th hole with a bogey. Walker, who had come into the day with a 1-stroke lead over Emiliano Grillo, kept his cool with a solid -4 on the day to keep a share of the lead. Grillo, who started his day on the back nine, actually played his way into a tie atop the leaderboard, before taking bogey on 8 to again fall one stroke back.

The shot of the day was by Hideki Matsuyama, who was making his approach on the 377-yard 2nd hole. After sailing just past the hole, his shot bit the green and gently rolled back to the pin, falling for an eagle 2. Matsuyama would finish at -3 on the day, bringing him to -4 overall, good enough for four-way tie with Rickie Fowler, Harris English, and Jamie Donaldson for 9th

There were plenty of notable names that failed to make the cut, including Rory McIlroy (+3), Sergio Garcia (+5), and pre-tourney favorite Dustin Johnson (+9). Worst round of the day went to Omar Uresti, who was 8-over on the front 9, and played even on the back to finish at 78 on the day and 150 (+10) overall.

Today’s forecast calls for highs in the low 80s and rain to begin in earnest around 1 pm, and continuing off and on through Sunday.
