After a few hours of glorious sunshine on Saturday, Mother Nature pounded Baltusrol Golf Club with rain, forcing suspension of the third round of the PGA Championship after just 37 of 86 golfers had finished all 18 holes, and setting the stage for a hectic Sunday – assuming the weather cooperates.

Kevin Kisner and Padraig Harrington had the best rounds of the day, with each shooting a 5-under 65. Kisner was just -2 on the day after 14, but got hot, making birdie on the next three holes, allowing himself to climb all the way from 48th to a tie for 6th at -5. Harrington climbed even further, coming from 61st to a tie for 10th at -4 after a round in which he didn’t make a single bogey.

Russell Knox tapped in a putt for par, for 3-under 67 on the day, just moments before an official blew the horn to suspend play, leaving Marc Leishman to wait until 7am today to attempt a 12-foot for birdie. Afterward Knox tweet at his playing partner, “Grub, showered and feet now up. Make that putt so we don’t play 4 straight days together.” What Know didn’t know at the time was that they’ll be together whether Leishman makes it or not.

The plan for Sunday is to have the six remaining pairings start to tee off for round 3 at 7am, with co-leaders Jimmie Walker and Robert Streb beginning at 8am, with the regularly scheduled tee times to follow. With any luck, they’ll finish shortly after noon, and then go right back to the first tee for another 18 holes. Because time is of the essence, players will not be re-paired by score after completion of the third round, so if Streb or Walker flame out, they’ll still play the fourth and final round together. But this all assumes (hopes, prays) that rain doesn’t make an even bigger mess of things, and that doesn’t seem likely, given that the forecast calls for a better than 40% chance of rain from 10am to 8pm.
