Ivan Nova has yet to recapture the magic of his rookie season of 2011, when he went 16-4 with a 3.70 ERA. In the years since, he’s dealt with inflammation in his rotator cuff and triceps, as well as a torn UCL that required Tommy John surgery. Nova started 2016 in the bullpen, where he compiled a 5.14 ERA in 14 innings. Since moving to the rotation on May 9, he’s made 10 starts, lasting just 55 ⅓ with an ERA of 5.37 thanks to 66 hits, including 12 homers. His last start was a no-decision against the Rangers in which he gave up 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.
Drew Pomeranz, 27, has emerged as the Padres’ ace in his first season with the team, and just his second season as a fulltime starter. Pomeranz showed promise in Oakland, where he finally got a handle on the walks that had dogged him in Colorado, but this year they’ve crept back up to 4 per 9 innings. However, his strikeout rate has jumped even further, from 8.6 to 10.4, and the continued drop in his BABIP, to .250, have led to a newfound level of success. He did, however, just endure a 5-game stretch where he pitched 28 innings with a 5.46 ERA, though his last start saw him get back on track, as he posted 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 SO in a 3-0 win over the Reds.
