MLB on Sling TV: Red Sox at Astros on FS1, More Games on Fox Sports Regional Networks
Boston Red Sox (Buchholz 0-1, 5.74) at Houston Astros (Fiers 1-1, 6.48), 4:05pm ET Saturday on FS1
In his second start in the bigs, Clay Buchholz threw a no-hitter. He then had a couple of seasons pitching kinda meh… Then, in 2010, he made the All-Star team and finished 6th in the CY Young balloting. This was followed by an injury-plagued season in 2011; another meh… season in 2012; another All-Star selection in 2013, a season that was tainted with rumors of ball doctoring before it was cut short by injury; 2014 saw him pitch more than 110 innings for just the third time, but it also saw him post a 5.34 ERA, worst in the American League among qualifiers. And 2015 was another not bad, but injury-shortened year in which he had a 3.26 ERA over just 18 starts. So far, 2016 is shaping up to be a microcosm of Buchholz’s career, as in his first two starts he lasted a total of 9 innings and gave up 10 runs on 11 hits and 6 walks, but in his last start he went 6 ⅔, and allowed 0 runs, but K’ed just 2 batters, and the Sox still lost 4-3.
This has not been a great year for Mike Fiers. In his best start, a 6-inning, 3-run effort against the Royals, he got the loss in a 3-2 game. More recently, against the Tigers, Fiers lasted 5 ⅔ innings, and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 5, but surrendering 3 homers. Fiers is currently tied for most home runs allowed in the Majors, but is also leading all of baseball in fewest walks per 9 innings, and has the highest strikeout-to-walk ratio – it would appear he’s getting a little too much of the plate.
