Johnny Cueto has been brilliant over his last 3 starts, giving up just 5 runs over 23 innings, while fanning 18 and walking 4, including a complete game in his last outing, holding the Cardinals to just 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk. In 4 previous starts against LA this season, Cueto has gone 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 28 ⅓ innings, with 29 strikeouts and just 5 walks – if you throw out the first inning of his first start against them, those numbers change to a 1.64 ERA in 27 ⅓ innings with 29 K’s and just 3 walks. Rich Hill has been brilliant, as well, since coming over to LA in a trade, posting a 1.48 ERA in 24 ⅓ innings spanning 4 starts. In his second-to-last start, Hill became the first pitcher in baseball history to get pulled from a game after throwing 7 perfect innings, in a game against the Marlins. Manager Dave Roberts made the call after the medical team determined that blisters that had caused Hill to miss 7 weeks were in danger of returning – it was the right thing, as Hill is too valuable to the Dodgers’ title hopes.
Last night Madison Bumgarner outdueled Clayton Kershaw, handing over to the SF bullpen a 1-0 lead, but the Dodgers rallied in the bottom of the 9th, with Adrian Gonzalez’s RBI double giving LA a 2-1 walkoff win. The Giants have gone 22-38 since the All Star Game, bringing their record to 79-71, 6 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. Five of the Giants’ remaining 12 games are against the Dodgers, so one could argue that they’re still in the hunt, but realistically, they’d need to sweep all five games. They’d be better off focusing on the Wild Card, where they’re tied with the Cardinals for the second Wild Card spot, 1 game behind the Mets.
