Since making an atrocious Major League debut that saw him surrender 6 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 ⅓, D’back starter Braden Shipley has been merely bad. Yes, there was the 3-start stretch where he went 19 innings with a 0.95 ERA, but he walked 8 and had a BABIP of .212 – it wasn’t going to last. His next 4 starts were: 23 IP 29 H 19 R 7 BB 9 SO 6 HR 7.04 ERA. Incredibly, a move the pen made things even worse, as he gave up 8 runs in 7 ⅔. So of course they moved him back to the rotation.
Clayton Richard is the Pete Best of the 2016 Chicago Cubs, having been cut from the team after posting a 6.43 ERA in 14 innings spanning 25 appearances – not exactly what you’re looking for from a lefty specialist out of the pen. But unlike Best, who receded into obscurity, Richard has had the Fates smile upon him, pitching 37 innings with a 1.70 ERA since returning to San Diego, where he’d played from 2009 to 2013. And as a starter, he’s been even better, with a 0.90 ERA over his last 30 innings.
The Diamondbacks and the the Padres are currently in a pitched battle for last place in the NL West, with the D’backs at 63-86 holding a 1-game advantage, which is to say they’re in 4th place, ahead of the Padres, not that they hold an advantage in the fight for 5th place, ya dig?
