Despite having led American League pitchers in hits, home runs and earned runs allowed, Jeff Samardzija was signed in the offseason to help the Giants make their even-year march to the World Series, and so far he’s been pretty OK – far better than last year, anyway. On Monday, he led the Giants to a 7-2 win over the Rockies, pitching eight innings, and giving up just two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five – he even hit a double. His walk rate has ballooned a touch so far, but his K’s are up and homers are down and his ERA is a run and a half better than last year. It’s still early, but if he pitches like this all season, the Giants will have gotten a bargain.
Kenta Maeda was signed by the Dodgers to help fill the gaping void left by the departure of Zack Greinke and, thus far, his Major League career is the stuff of legend-in-the-making, as he’s had two starts, going six innings in each one, giving up five hits, zero runs while striking out four. Add to that the fact that he’s gone one-for-five with a home run (and a 149 OPS+), and he’s already established himself in the NL Rookie of the Year race, alongside teammate Corey Seager.
