San Francisco Giants (Peavy 2-5, 6.34) at St. Louis Cardinals (Martinez 5-5, 3.69)
8pm ET on ESPN

Just days after his 35th birthday, Jake Peavy finds himself slogging through what is shaping up to be the worst season of his 15-year career: He’s got an ERA 1.4 runs higher than ever before, his second-worst strikeout and home run rates, a career-high WHIP, and he’s on pace for a career high in losses, dovetailing nicely with his career-low winning percentage. All that said, he’s pitched well in 3 of his last four starts, most recently pitching 7 shutout innings, giving up just a hit, against the Braves en route to a 4-0 win. Yeah, the Braves have the worst offense in the bigs, but they’re still a Major League team. Kinda…

Carlos Martinez was both lucky and good in his first 4 starts, going 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA, thanks to a .182 BABIP, and despite an underwhelming 6.4 K’s per 9. Then he got roughed up by the Nats, and after that left a game against the Pirates after just 3 ⅓, having succumbed to fatigue. In his next two starts, he has so little in the tank that he gave up 8 runs in 10 innings, and induced only 10 swinging strikes, about half his normal rate. Like so many before him, he hit bottom against the Cubs: 5 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 7 SO. And then, like so many others before him, he looked real good against the Brewers, fanning 8 in 8 innings of 5-hit shutout ball. Hopefully he’s turned the corner.
