Last night in baseball, the Marlins’ Adam Conley pitched 8 shutout innings, giving up just 4 hits and a walk, while K’ing 4 en route to a 3-0 blanking of the Braves; Starlin Castro launched a solo shot in the 9th to give the Yankees a 9-8 walkoff win over the Rockies; Mets starter Noah Syndergaard had to leave the game with discomfort in his right elbow, but not before pitching 6 innings and getting the win in a 4-3 triumph over the Royals; Lance McCullers gave up 1 run in 5 ⅔ innings, and Jose Altuve homered to lead the Astros past the Angels 3-2; the Cardinals did the impossible, handing Jake Arrieta the loss and sweeping the Cubs with a 7-2 victory; Scooter Gennett went 3-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBI to power the Brewers past the A’s 4-2; Russell Martin hit a 3-run homer in the 1st to send the Blue Jays on their way to a 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks; Mark Trumbo doubled and homered, and scored twice in the Orioles 7-2 defeat of the Padres; the Giants bullpen pitched 6 shutout innings as their lineup fought out of a 6-1 hole to beat the Pirates 7-6; the Red Sox blew a pair of 2-run leads, as the White Sox’ Melky Cabrera went 4-for-5 with a homer, double and 4 RBI for an 8-6 win; Indians starter Trevor Bauer went the distance, giving up just 1 run on 3 hits and a walk, striking out 10, in 6-1 defeat of the Rays; Steven Moya’s homer in the 5th chased Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma, who gave up 5 runs on 11 hits and 3 walks, as the M’s won 5-1; Cole Hamels struck out 8 in 6 innings of 1-run ball as the Rangers beat the Reds 6-4; Trevor Plouffe went 3-for-4 with a double, 2 runs, and an RBI to lead the Twins past the Phillies 6-5; and when Yasiel Puig saw that his 9th inning single had skipped past outfielder Michael Taylor, he turned on the jets, chasing teammate Howie Kendrick all around the bases to a wild 4-3 walkoff win over the Nationals.
