The baseball universe bore all manner of fruits last night – reliever Matt Albers threw 2 scoreless innings, hit a double and scored the winning run in the 13th as the White Sox beat the Mets 2-1; the Brewers beat the Cardinals 3-1 thanks largely to Zach Davies’ 8 shutout innings, during which he struck out 9; Sean Manaea pitched 6 innings, giving up just 1 run on 5 hits and 3 walks while fanning 8 in the A’s 5-1 defeat of the Twins; Yan Gomes drove home Lonnie Chisenhall with a walkoff single in the 11th to lead the Indians past the Rangers 5-4; Mookie Betts followed up his 3-homer game with a 2-homer game, but the Red Sox fell the Orioles 13-9 in a game in which the two starters combined to pitch 5 innings and give up 13 runs; MIchael Fulmer pitched 7 ⅔ scoreless innings as the Tigers blanked the Angels 3-0; the Nationals’ Max Scherzer fanned 11 in 8 innings, and Wilson Ramos went 3-for-4 with a homer and 4 RBI in 7-2 win over the Phillies; Aaron Sanchez scattered 7 hits and two walks over 6 ⅔ scoreless innings, and Darwin Barney went 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored as the Blue Jays shut out the Yankees 7-0; Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman launched a walkoff homer in the 11th to beat the Giants 5-4; Adam Conley struck out 9 over 6 shutout innings to lead the Marlins over the Pirates 3-2; the Cubs’ Jon Lester went the distance, giving up just 1 run on 4 hits, while fanning 10; George Springer’s walkoff homer in the 11th gave the Astros a 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks; Lorenzo Cain went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI as the Royals bested the Rays 6-3; Reds starter John Lamb pitched 7 innings, giving up just 1 run en route to a 7-2 win over the Rockies; and the Padres responded to being labeled by their boss “miserable failures by pounding out 19 hits, including 4 home runs, in a 14-6 beatdown of the Mariners.
