On Labor Day across MLB, Chris Coghlan went 2-for-2 with a run scored and 3 RBI after entering the game in the 7th as a pinch hitter, as the Cubs rolled over the Brewers 7-2; Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBI to power the Yankees past the Blue Jays 5-3; Bartolo Colon pulled another one out of his hat, pitching 6 shutout innings, and Matt Reynolds and Kelly Johnson each homered, as the Mets blanked the Reds 5-0; Peter Bourjos went 3-for-4 with a triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI to lead the Phillies past the Marlins 6-2; Ubaldo Jimenez gave up a 3-run homer with two out in the first, and then allowed just a walk over the next 8 ⅓ innings as the Orioles beat the Rays 7-3; Eric Hosmer and Kendrys Morales each launched 3-run bombs to give the Royals an 11-5 victory over the Twins; Adam Wainwright gave up 4 runs in 5 innings, but also scored a run and drove in 3 more, as the Cardinals doubled up the Pirates 12-6; the Angels out-punched the A’s 10-7, as LA’s first four batters combined for 9 hits, 7 runs, and 3 RBI; rookie phenom Trea Turner singled, tripled and homered, scoring 1 run and driving in 3 more, and Max Scherzer surrendered just 2 runs over 7 innings as the Nationals bested the Braves 6-4; Justin Upton’s 2-run shot in the 11th gave the Tigers a 5-3 win over the White Sox; the Mariners pounde the Rangers 14-6, as Franklin Gutierrez went 3-for-4 with a run scored and 4 RBI; Chad Bettis pitched the game of his life, holding San Francisco to 2 hits over 9 innings, and getting on base as many time as SF did, as the Rockies shut out the Giants 6-0; Edwin Jackson held Boston in check for 7 shutout innings, scattering 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 11, as the Padres beat the Red Sox 2-1; Alex Bregman homered, scored a pair, and drove in a pair to power the Astros over the Indians 6-2; and the Dodgers ate the Diamondbacks’ lunch 10-2, as LA hit 5 home runs in 5 innings against former teammate Zack Greinke.
