The 2016 US Open at Oakmont

It was a soggy day at Oakmont, as play at the 2016 US Open was delayed twice in deference to rain, leaving players wet and cranky, and making an already tough course all the more challenging.
When officials called it a day, with much of the field never even taking so much as a stroke, Andrew Landry, a 28-year-old Texan navigating his rookie year on the tour, was atop the leaderboard at -3 through 17 holes. And Landry will resume play today looking at a very makeable putt for birdie on 18 that could leave him at 66 for the round. Not too shabby. Apparently, this is all as Landry predicted.
“I’m going to win this tournament,” Landry reportedly told his father during the lead-up to the tournemaent. Sure, no one ever goes into one of these things thinking they’re gonna lose, but c’mon…
Not everyone walked off the course feeling as good as Landry, as many golfers were upset that they weren’t allowed to warm up following the first delay, which lasted more than an hour. When play was first called, officials didn’t think it would be that bad, and so had players take cover on the course rather than bringing them back to the clubhouse. Rules don’t permit practice on the course, so warmups would’ve entailed leaving the course, adding to the already significant delay. The second play stoppage would prove even longer, clocking in north of two hours.
“It’s a challenge not being able to warm up, going out there and trying to hit tee shots at the U.S. Open,” said defending champion Jordan Spieth afterward. “But it is what it is.” Spieth finished the day tied for 16th at +1 after just 11 holes.
American Bubba Watson finds himself in a tie for second place with New Zealand’s Danny Lee at -2. But where Lee did it in 13 holes, with birdies on 4 and 6, Watson played 14 holes, going on a rollercoaster ride that saw him go bogey, birdie, birdie, bogey, bogey, birdie, birdie, par, birdie on holes 4 through 10. Sounds exhausting.
The first round will resume Friday morning, with coverage starting at 8am. Among the notables who never got to tee off are Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen. It’s gonna be a long day of golf.
