“Why am I here?” Shoshanna yells after an obese man slams into her on the people mover at the airport upon her return to the United States.
I feel like every one of our Girls has said or thought this, or some variation of this, at point or another this season: Marnie questions why she’s married to Desi; Hannah questions why she’s with Fran; Shoshanna questioned why she was in Japan, and now she’s questioning why she came back to the U.S.; Jessa questions why she doesn’t follow her heart and be with Adam. “Why” is not the question they should be asking, but “How?” Maybe if they answered the “how,” the “why” would follow and maybe, just maybe, they’d learn from their mistakes.

This is not Hannah’s week for acting mature but it is her week for growing pains; Showing your lady parts a la Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct to your boss to get out of trouble is not exactly something a strong, mature “feminist” would do. Since Lena Dunham wrote the script, I can only assume/hope that moment will play a heavy hand in how Hannah gets it together – sometimes you have to fall so far down the only way out is to go up.

Normally, an entire episode dedicated to Marnie would have me rolling my eyes at her incessant need to brag, pick, whine and complain, and the fact that Marnie (if she were a real person) would be psyched to know she had a whole episode dedicated to her. But, this week’s Girls was not like that, not at all. This week’s episode was so well written and so artfully constructed, it made me remember why I started watching this show in the first place: beyond all the dreadful, immature drama and insanity is a show about four twenty-something women finding their own way through life, driven by extremely skillful talents, like Lena Dunham.

This week was probably the most honest episode of Girls I’ve seen in a long time – maybe ever. It seems impossible to rank the main characters' crazy, because amidst their craziness they found incredible moments of honesty with themselves that may actually evolve these characters we’ve grown to love, for better or worse.
Hannah
This was a big episode for Hannah and her mother; they both realized things about themselves and their current love-life situation while away on a yoga and spiritual retreat. Elijah and Dill are the cutest couple currently on the show. Elijah has been exactly 0% crazy this whole season, which makes me want to be happy for him while I simultaneously fear for his future with Dill.

And, we’re back into the drama with both feet. I knew Hannah’s overly dramatic personality couldn’t take a backseat to Marnie’s for much longer, and now that she is on her honeymoon, pronouncing “Ecuador” like a local, Marnie is once again only the second craziest person ever to draw breath. The crazy in this episode was pretty level across the board, apart from Hannah’s psycho explosion – much the way Marnie took the crazy cake in episode one. Perhaps that’s the trend: only one girl is allowed to be over-the-top nuts per episode.

To my surprise, this week’s episode of Girls was the most sensible and non-distracting episode I’ve seen in awhile: we actually had a chance to focus on and relate to the drama unfolding without being distracted by this or that character’s overreaction.
Elijah
Level: Jessica Simpson’s entire stint on Newlyweds.
Elijah is hands-down my favorite character on the show. He’s just the right cocktail of outrageous, down-to-earth and hilarious to bring what seems to be a breather to a show that’s so easy to drown in. His charming and slightly delusional ways are subtle enough to make me love him, but how long can that last? If you’ve ever watched a minute of Girls, you know how insane the entire character list is, especially the four girls we focus on: Hannah (Lena Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), and Jessa (Jemima Kirke). At any given time, one girl seems clearly crazier than the others, though, the reality is they are all equal parts narcissistic and neurotic.
In the spirit of their chaotic personalities colliding for another 10 episodes for our enjoyment, I’m going to spend the next several weeks ranking the main cast – the guys are just as crazy, friends – from least crazy to most crazy on a scale of early 2000s pop culture references.

The Girls are back and little has changed. The gang is slightly older but still overly dramatic and extremely crazy – the qualities you either love or really, really hate about this show.
After going their separate ways – Shoshanna to Japan, Jessa to rehab, Hannah to Iowa and back, and Marnie getting married – the gang has found their way back together for Marnie’s big day, tying the knot with her loathsome boyfriend/bandmate Desi. But it wouldn’t be Girls without fighting, yelling, tears, confessions and boobs.
