New York Yankees (Eovaldi 9-8, 4.80) at Boston Red Sox (Pomeranz 8-9, 3.09)
7pm ET on ESPN

The Red Sox defeated the Yankees 5-3 Tuesday night at Fenway Park, behind 8 solid innings from starter Rick Porcello, and a 3-for-3 night from recent call-up Andrew Benintendi. The Sox are now 61-50, a game and a half back of the Blue Jays and Orioles in the AL East, and holding a one game lead over the Tigers for the second Wild Card spot, while the Yankees are 7 back in the East at 56-56.

The Yankees are in Boston for what is to be Alex Rodriguez’s final visit in pinstripes, as he recently announced that Friday in Tampa will be his last game with the Yankees. Rodriguez of course has been an arch villain in Fenway, at the center of an epic brawl, an absurd slapping incident, and having had the same home run thrown back onto the field twice. But the unimaginable happened during last night’s game, as the 9th inning saw the Fenway Faithful erupt into a chant of “We Want A-Rod!”

So many memories… he will be missed.

If you’re one of those who thinks the Yankees have given up on 2016 too soon, consider that Nathan Eovaldi leads the team in wins. Eovaldi recently went through a brutal 5-start stretch during which he posted a 9.20 ERA over 30 ⅓ innings, earning himself a short stint in the bullpen. Since returning to the rotation, he’s been better – 3.60 ERA over 25 IP, thanks to a .205 BABIP – but he’s not good.

After last night’s much needed victory, the Red Sox have won just 7 of their last 18 games, as the pitching has improved significantly, surrendering just 4.1 runs per game, but the bats have fallen off their pace of 5.7 runs per game earlier in the year, scoring just 4.1.

Drew Pomeranz takes the hill for the Sox tonight for his fifth start since being brought over in a trade that sought to shore up a rotation that had seen too much of the likes of Joe Kelly and Clay Buchholz. But Pomeranz has been terrible thus far, with a 6.20 ERA over 20 ⅓ innings, during which he’s served up 5 gopher balls, and walked 12.
