Unfortunately for the Tigers, the one time Daniel Norris faced Cleveland this year, he got injured, leaving the game after just 2+ innings with a strained oblique. But since returning from the injury on August 9, Norris has been pretty good, going 4-3 with a 3.46 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 39 innings. Trevor Bauer, on the other hand, has had a rough go of it since July 7, going 4-5 with a 5.38 ERA over 75 ⅓ innings, with his last 2 outing being particularly gruesome. In back-to-back starts against Houston and Chicago, he gave up 11 runs in 10 ⅓.
The Tigers came into the weekend 6 games behind the Indians, your presumptive AL Central champs, but trailed the Orioles and the Blue Jays by just 2 games in the hunt for a Wild Card spot.
New York Yankees (Sabathia 8-12, 4.10) at Boston Red Sox (Pomeranz 10-12, 3.25)

CC Sabathia has been coming on strong over his last 5 starts, with a 2.40 ERA, despite serving up a ghastly 5 home runs in just 30 innings. In his lone start against Boston this season, he went 5 1/3 , giving up 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks, as the Sox won 5-2.
Drew Pomeranz has had a tough time in Boston since coming over in a trade from San Diego, whose GM was recently suspended for shenanigans related to the transaction. After a rough adjustment period of 3 starts (0-2, 7.53 ERA), he ran off a stretch of 7 starts with a 2.70 ERA and 44 K’s over 42 ⅓ innings, but Boston went just 3-4 in those games. And then on Tuesday, he got rocked by the Orioles: 2 IP 4 H 5 R 2 BB 3 SO 2 HR – en route to a 6-3 loss.
The Red Sox took the first game of this series Thursday in dramatic fashion, with Hanley Ramirez’s 3-run bomb capping a 5-run rally in the 9th for a 7-5 walkoff win, that brought Sox record to 82-64, with a 2-game lead in the East, and dropped the Yankees to 77-69, 5 back of Boston and 3 games out of the Wild Card.
