Mike Pelfrey is having one weird start to his season: his 2.79 ERA suggest that his 0-2 record is a matter of tough luck, but the truth is that his low ERA is the result of exceptionally good luck. Pelfrey has allowed 12 hits and 7 walks in just 9 ⅔ innings, and has struck out just 6 – his WHIP is 1.10 higher than his SO/BB ratio. Even in his last start, which the Tigers lost 1-0, he was the beneficiary of unusual luck, allowing just 1 run, despite giving up 5 hits and 6 walks in 6 innings. Only by the grace of three double plays did he survive as long as he did. Weep not for Mike Pelfrey.
Edinson Volquez is off to a fine start for the World Champion Royals, having given up no more than 2 runs in any of his three starts. Most recently he went 6 innings against the A’s, allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits, but he also walked 4 and struck out just 2. It was a significant drop off from his previous start, when he K’ed 10 and walked none. All in all, however, his strikeout to walk ratio of 2.43 would be the best of his career.
Last night, the Tigers beat the Royals 3-2, as Detroit’s Victor Martinez collected his 1,000 career RBI, and Jordan Zimmerman lifted his record to 3-0 with 6 ⅓ innings of shutout baseball with 8 K’s.
