At 33, it’s unlikely Justin Verlander will ever contend for a Cy Young Award or win 20 games, again, but he is, once again, one of the better pitchers in the game, engaged to Kate Upton, and making $28 million this season. He’s been brilliant over his last four starts, going 27 2/3 with a 1.63 ERA, but the Tigers could only parlay that into two wins. The Tigers lost a tough one on Sunday, scoring 3 in the top of the 9th to tie it, only to lose on a Melky Cabrera walkoff single in the bottom half of the inning to fall to 51-48, 6 games back of the Indians in the AL Central.
Drew Pomeranz, aka Droopy (as in Drew P., get it?), got worked over in his Red Sox debut. After getting through 3 innings unscathed against the Giants, he headed into the 4th nursing an 8-run lead, and promptly gave up a walk, single, 3-run homer, single, 2-run homer, single, and another single before manage John Farrell stopped the bleeding with a call to the pen, as the Sox held on to win 11-7. After splitting a 4-game series against the lowly Twins, the Sox are 55-41, a game and a half out of first in AL East behind the Orioles, though they do lead the Wild Card standings.
