Across the baseball landscape on Wednesday Nolan Arenado jacked a second-inning grand slam to send the Rockies on their way to an 11-1 beatdown of the Cardinals; Evan Gattis hit a pair of homers and drove in 3 runs as the Astros bested the A’s 6-5; Felix Hernandez threw 7 shutout innings and Robinson Cano hit a walkoff sac-fly in the 12th to give the Mariners a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays; rookie Andrew Benentendi hit a 3-run homer and Clay Buchholz gave up just 1 run on 3 hits over 7 innings in the Red Sox 5-1 defeat of the Orioles; Tommy Joseph had an RBI double and a 2-run homer to deliver the Phillies an 8-3 win over Chris Sale and the White Sox; Corey Kluber fanned 9 over 6 ⅓ innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks as the Indians bested the Royals 4-3; Ender Inciarte drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th and then in the bottom of the inning, with runners on first and second, robbed Yoenis Cespedes of a walkoff home run to secure the Braves’ 4-3 win over the Mets; Ryan Zimmerman’s 3-run homer in the 4th was the big blow in the Nationals’ 8-3 defeat of Marlins; Gary Sanchez’s reign of terror continued, as he hit a pair of home runs and an RBI single to power the Yankees to an 11-5 win over the Rays – he now has 19 home runs in just 166 at-bats; Mike Trout’s 3-run homer in the 5th proved to be the difference in the Angels’ 5-4 win over the Rangers; John Lacky went 7, giving up just 2 runs, and Dexter Fowler and Kris Bryant each homered as the Cubs bullied the Reds 9-2; Andrew McCutchen hit a 1st-inning solo shot and Chad Kuhl threw 6 innings of 5-hit, 1-run ball to lead the Pirates past the Brewers 4-1; the Tigers and Twins got rained out; Paul Goldschmidt hit a pair of homers, driving in all the Diamondbacks’ runs in a 3-2 win over the Padres; and Yasiel PuigYourFirend hit a 3-run homer and Kent Maeda went 5, allowing 2 runs, and driving in 1 as the Dodgers beat the Giants 9-3.
