MLB on Sling TV: Nationals at Mets on ESPN; regional action on FOX Sports Networks

(all times Eastern)

Washington Nationals (Gonzalez 2-1, 1.93) at New York Mets (Colon 3-2, 3.53), 7pm ET on ESPN
Gio Gonzalez could very easily be 6-1. He’s got a good, not great 2.92 SO/BB ratio, a better than average 1.12 WHIP, he’s allowed a meager .4 homers per 9, and just once has he allowed more than 3 runs in any of his starts, but that was against the Cubs, so… In his last start, a 5-3 win over the Marlins, he gave up 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 7, but last ed just 5 innings, as the final frame was took a toll, as he had to throw 39 pitches.

Just 6 days shy of his 43rd birthday, Bartolo Colon is the oldest player in the Majors, and not two weeks ago he became the oldest player in baseball history to hit his first career home run. He’s been around so long that he is the active leader in career wins, losses, starts, innings, hits, earned runs, home runs, and batters faced. And through it all he remains one of the better starting pitchers in baseball – not an ace, nor even an all star, but a solid and dependable middle-of-the-rotation guy. He’s averaging 6 innings per start, his SO/BB ratio is 9 – he’s still got it. However, his last start went pear-shaped, as the Dodgers touched him for 5 runs on 7 hits, including 2 homers, in just 5 innings, as LA prevailed 5-0.

Last night saw the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard outduel the Nationals Max Scherzer for a 2-0 win. Syndergaard went 7 shutout innings, giving up just 5 hits and 0 walks, and striking out 10, while Scherzer lasted 6 ⅓, giving up 3 hits and 3 walks, also striking out 10 – but 2 of his 3 hits were solo shots to Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto.
