Baseball awoke Sunday to news that it had lost one of its rising stars, Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez, just 24, in a boating accident off the shores of Miami Beach. Fernandez’s enthusiasm and backstory were as incredible as his talent, his passing inspiring an outpouring of tributes and emotion rare for a man so young – “his death is to baseball what Buddy Holly’s was to rock and James Dean’s was to movies,” wrote Ben Lindbergh of The Ringer. He will be dearly missed by his pregnant girlfriend, his family, the Marlins and Major League baseball, the people of Miami and Cuba, and fans of the game everywhere.

The Marlins canceled their game against the Braves, but baseball went on elsewhere, delivering the type of strangeness and triumph that keeps us coming back for more. New York scored 2 in the 9th to take a 3-2 lead, Edwin Encarnacion hit an RBI infield single in the bottom half of the inning to give the Blue Jays a 4-3 win over the Yankees; Carlos Rodon fanned 11 and allowed just 2 hits over 8 innings as the White Sox blanked the Indians 3-0; Kansas City chased Detroit starter Matt Boyd before he could record a single out, by scoring 4 runs in the first, setting themselves on their way to a 12-9 Royals victory over the Tigers, in a game in which 9 different pitchers allowed runs; Robert Gsellman went 7, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks while fanning 8, and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a grand slam to lead the Mets to a 17-0 evisceration of the Phillies; Boston pitchers fanned a record 23 in a 10-inning game, and Dustin Pedroia homered in the 3rd, and scored the winning run in the 10th in a bizarre play at the plate in which he danced around catcher Luke Maile, who finally tagged him only to have the ball squirt away, giving the Red Sox a 3-2 win over the Rays; Hyun Soo Kim’s 2-run homer was all the Orioles needed to beat the Diamondbacks 2-1; Bryce Harper injured his thumb diving headfirst into 3rd to avoid a fake take from Jung Ho Kang, who subsequent had to elude an AJ Cole fastball thrown behind his head, causing the benches to clear – oh, and the Nationals beat the Pirates 10-7; Brandon Finnegan fanned 4 over 5 scoreless innings, setting the stage for a 4-2 Reds victory over the Brewers; Nelson Cruz hit a pair on solo homers, and Jesus Sucre hit a 2-run shot to power the Mariners 4-3 win over the Twins; Joe Musgrove pitched 7 innings of 1-run ball, and Evan Gattis, Tony Kemp and Tyler White each hit solo homers to lead the Astros to a 4-1 over the Angels; Colby Lewis had a disastrous 2nd inning, giving up a walk, 4 singles, a double and a home run to put his team into a 7-run hole, setting the stage for the Rangers’ 7-1 loss to the A’s; the Dodgers made legendary broadcaster Vin Scully’s final home game a memorable one, clinching the NL West Charlie Culberson’s walk-off homer in the 10th for the Dodgers’ 4-3 win against the Rockies; the San Francisco bullpen let another one slip away, as San Diego overcame a 3-1 deficit with Wil Myers’ RBI single in the 7th being the difference in the Padres’ 4-3 defeat of the Giants; and the Cubs beat the Cardinals 3-1 behind 6 ⅔ shutout innings from Jon Lester, who may have wrapped up the NL Cy Young race.
