Mets (Matz 8-7, 3.35) at New York Yankees (Green 1-2, 4.56)
7pm ET on ESPN

Steven Matz took a tough loss in his last outing, as he gave up just 2 runs over 6 innings, but the Mets’ bats and bullpen failed him, as the team suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Rockies. Matz is now 1-6 over his last seven decisions, with a 4.37 ERA, thanks to a .372 BABIP and 7 home runs in just 57 ⅔ innings. Of late, he’s been dealing with a bone spur in his elbow, but recently assured fans he’s “feeling really good.”

The Mets got some much needed offensive help at Monday’s trade deadline, acquiring NL RBI leader Jay Bruce from the Reds. Bruce, 29, who has slugged 25 homers with 90 RBI and an .875 OPS this season, made his Mets debut last night, going 0-for-4, but they still beat the Yankees 7-1 behind 7 shutout innings from Jacob deGrom. The Mets are now 7 ½ back in the NL East, but just a game and a half off the pace in the Wild Card race.

Ivan Nova was originally slated to start tonight’s game, but he was just one of many guys shipped out of the Bronx to over the final days before the trade deadline. Pitching in Nova’s stead is rookie Chad Green, who’s been victimized by the long ball in his 3 starts, giving up 7 in just 14 1/3 innings, leading to a 7.53 ERA as a starter. Nova is headed to the Pirates, Aroldis Chapman has been with the Cubs for a week, Andrew Miller is an Indian, and Carlos Beltran joined the Rangers. GM Brian Cashman wisely saw he had an aging and overpaid team that was, at 53-52 and 5 ½ back of the Wild Card, not going nowhere, and turned a handful of guys who were of no real use into perhaps the best minor league system in baseball.
