Ageless wonder Bartolo Colon keeps on chugging along. In his 43rd summer, and fatter than your unemployed uncle, Colon this season has made his 4th All Star team, hit his first home run and drawn his first walk, all while emerging as the anchor of a rotation that is littered with pre-season Cy Young picks. But he’s had some trouble of late, going 3-3 over his last 8 starts with a 4.47 ERA – and that’s the crazy thing, this fat old dude’s rough patch is right in line with the league average. Here’s hoping he pitches till he’s 50.
Losers of 15 of their previous 22 games, the Mets head into the weekend at 60-61, in third place in the NL East, 11 ½ games behind the Nationals, and 4 ½ behind the Cardinals in the Wold Card hunt.
After a promising rookie year in 2012, followed by an better year in 2013, Matt Moore lost most of the next two seasons to injuries. Now he’s back and still struggling to find his old form, though he’s been good enough that the Giants traded for him at the deadline to shore up their rotation, which like all rotations, has suffered a few too many injuries. His first 2 starts for SF were promising, as in each he gave up 2 runs on 3 hits while fanning 7 over 6 innings – but he also walked 6 in one, and 5 in the other. His last start was a rough one, as he got tagged for 5 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. What’s interesting about Moore is that the one year he was really good, 2013, he led the league in wild pitches with 17 in 150 ⅓ innings, while uncorking only 19 in the other 407 ⅔ innings of his career. Maybe he needs to let it fly again.
The Giants went into the All Star break with a 6 ½ game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West, and then began the second half of the season by losing 6 in a row, and they’ve yet to recover, as they’re pitching staff has posted a 4.36 ERA over their last 31 games, going 10-21. They awoke Friday morning to find themselves at 67-54, a half-game behind the Dodgers.
