MLB on Sling TV: Marlins at Mets
Marlins Miami vs. New York Mets (7pm ET Monday, ESPN)
On Sunday, the Miami Marlins fell to 1-3 following a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Washington Nationals. Marlins' starter Tom Koehler had been cruising, giving up just one run through the first six innings, but in the bottom of the seventh, he was chased by a Anthony Rendon single and gave way to reliever Chris Narveson, who promptly loaded the bases before turning the ball over to Edwin Jackson. Moments later Jayson Werth hit a run-scoring single and soon thereafter Clint Robinson followed suit, staking the Nats to a 3-1 lead. The Marlins tried valiantly to mount a comeback against Washington closer Jonathan Papelbon as Yelich hit a solo shot and Martin Prado singled, but the rally would fall short. The Marlins' Dee Gordon and Christian Yelich each continued to rake, the former going two-for-four with a run scored while the later went one-for-two with a homer and two walks. Gordon’ OPS is now 1.187 and Yelich’s is 1.306.
Jarred Cosart makes his 2016 debut for the Marlins, after a rough 2015. Last season saw Cosart make 13 starts, during which he averaged just five innings with an ERA of 4.52, a grisly 1.42 SO/BB ratio and a home run every 24 at bats.
The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies Sunday 5-2 and the team’s record dropped to 2-3 as Mets starter Matt Harvey, again, came up short. The Mets were down just 1-0 heading into the sixth, but Harvey served up a one-out single to the Phillies’ Cesar Hernandez before Odubel Herrera made him pay, launching a two-run shot into the right field seats to make it 3-1. The Mets responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer of their own, off the bat of Yoenis Cespedes, but that was as close as they would get as Philly added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth. Harvey is now 0-2 with a 4.63 ERA and just five strikeouts in 11-and-two-thirds innings as he’s given up more runs than the rest of the staff combined. Cespedes and teammate David Wright both went two-for-four. Wright and Michael Conforto are tied for the team lead with an .821 OPS, but the team as a whole is hitting a paltry .192/.300/.254 – makes it real hard to win ballgames.
Steven Matz lived every Long Islanders dream last season, getting called up by the Mets on June 28 and spinning a gem as he went seven-and-two-thirds while striking out six and giving up just two runs in a 7-2 victory. On the season he went 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA in six starts, covering 35-and-two-third innings. He’ll be making his 2016 debut tonight.
