The Cubs have been so good this year that Kyle Hendricks is their starter with the worst record and the highest ERA, and yet he’s having an OK year. He’s yet to give up more than 4 runs in any one start, he’s a got a 4.1 SO/BB ratio, a 1.05 WHIP, he’s only given up 2 homers in 41 innings… he’s given the Cbs at least a chance in every game he’s started. Not surprisingly, the three games in which he’s given up 4 runs have all been Cubs losses, and in each of those he’s given up hits in bunches or been bitten by shaky defense or a wild pitch… His last start saw the Cubbies fall 4-2 to the Brewers, as he gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks, though he struck out 6.
Madison Bumgarner continues to snarl, snort and cuss his way through Major League lineups, and though his walk rate and home rate have popped a bit, he’s striking out 10.9 per 9 innings, he’s got a career low ERA of 2.45 and is on pace for his first 20-win season. His most recent starts was easily his best of the season, and among the best of his career. On May 17, he threw a complete game, giving up just 1 run on 5 hits, walked nobody and struck out 11 to lead the way to a 5-1 win. OK, it was against the Padres, and 4 of the K’s were of Adam Rosales, he of the .223 career batting average, but it still counts.
