Yesterday in the world of baseball, Melvin Upton Jr. went 2-for-3 with a walk, 2 runs scored, and a 3-run homer as the Blue Jays beat the Yankees 7-4; The Rays blanked the Padres 2-0 behind 7 ⅓ innings from Chris Archer, who gave up just 4 hits and a walk while fanning 9; Brandon Moss hit a 3-run homer, and Carlos Martinez pitched 7 innings of 3-hit, 1-run ball, striking out 7, to lead the Cardinals over the Astros 8-2; the Rockies squeaked past the Nationals 12-10, as Gerardo Parra hit a 3-run double and an RBI triple, and scored twice; the Andrew McCutchen renaissance continued with a 2-hit night, including a 2-run homer in the 5th that proved to be the difference in the Pirates 6-5 win over the Giants; Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a 2-run homer and a 2-run double as the Red Sox pounded the Orioles 8-1 in a rain-shortened affair; the Dodgers beat the Phillies 7-2 on the strength of Adrian Gonzalez’s 2 homers and 5 RBI; Adam Eaton’s grand slam (while blowing a bubble – really, watch the video below) was the capper on a 5-run 9th as the White Sox stunned the Indians 10-7; Eric Hosmer hit a 2-run homer, and Yordano Ventura struck out 7 over 6 ⅓ innings of 1-run ball to lead the Royals to a 4-1 win over the Tigers; the Twins “pounded” the Braves 10-3, despite hitting not a single homer, instead drawing 9 walks to inflict a slow death; Brandon Phillips scored or drove in all of his team’s runs in the Reds beat the Marlins 3-2; the Rangers outscored the A’s 6-2, behind Jonathan Lucroy’s homer and 3 RBI, and Yu Darvish’s 7-inning, 9-strikeout performance; Jorge Soler hit a 3-run homer in the first and Jon Lester pitched 6 ⅔ innings of 1-run ball to lead the Cubs over the Brewers 6-1; Rickie Weeks and Yasmany Tomas combined to got 5-for-8 with 6 runs, 11 RBI and 2 homers as the Diamondbacks swallowed the Mets whole 13-5; and Chris Iannetta had an infield RBI single in the 2nd, and scored on a sac fly in the 4th, as the Mariners defeated the Angels 4-3.
