Yesterday in baseball, Nick Castellanos was a triple short of the cycle, drove in 5 runs and scored a pair to lead the Tigers to an 11-2 pounding of the Indians; Freddie Galvis’ 2-run homer in the 8th was the decisive blow in the Phillies 4-3 victory over the Braves; Ervin Santana pitched a 2-hit shutout, striking out 8 and walking none as the Twins beat the A’s 4-0; Wilmer Flores hit a pair of solo homers in the Mets’ 4-2 win over the Marlins; Tucker Barnhart’s 3-run homer put the Reds up for good in their 5-3 defeat of the Cubs; Jonathan Schoop hit a 2-run double in the 12th to give the Orioles a 6-4 win over the Dodgers; Bryce Harper’s 3-run homer in the 1st set the tone as the Nationals beat the Brewers 7-4; David Ortiz hit a 2-run homer in the 1st and drove in a run with a sac fly in the 2nd to power the Red Sox’ 11-6 defeat of the Rangers; Marcus Stroman pitched 8 innings of 3-hit, 2-run ball to help the Blue Jays beat the Royals 4-2; Mike Trout homered and Jered Weaver pitched 6 innings of 1-run ball to lead the Angels over the Rays 7-2; Miguel Gonzalez threw 7 shutout innings as the White Sox blanked the Yankees 5-0; Carlos Gomez singled, doubled and tripled, drove in 3 runs, and scored another in the Astros 9-8 win over the Mariners; the Pirates’ pinch hitters went 0-for-4 but still managed to outscore the Cardinals 7-5; Yangervis Solarte singled, doubled and homered, driving in 5 runs and scoring 2, in the Padres 13-6 defeat of the Diamondbacks; and Johnny Cueto went the distance while striking out 8 in the Giants’ 5-1 victory over the Rockies.
