In baseball last night, the Pirates took both games of their doubleheader with the Mets by a score of 3-1, with Jonathon Niese pitching 7 shutout innings in the first game, and Juan Nicasio striking out 7 over 5 innings of 1-run ball in the nightcap; KC’s Yordano Ventura drilled Baltimore’s Manny Machado with a fastball, sparking a bench-clearing brawl in the midst of the Orioles 9-1 pounding of the Royals; Carlos Beltran and Starlin Castro each homered in the Yankees’ 6-3 win over the Angels; Jerad Eickhoff held the Cubs in check for 7 innings, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks, while fanning 8, in a 3-2 Phillies win; Ian Kinsler scored the tying run in the 9th and then had a walkoff single in the 10th for a 3-2 Tigers win against the Blue Jays; the Cardinals rallied for 2 in the top of 9th to tie it, but Joey Votto untied it in the bottom of the the 9th with a walkoff homer for a 7-6 Reds win; the Rangers went to 8-0 against the Astros this season with a 4-3 win powered by Ian Desmond’s 2-run homer in the 8th; Anthony Rendon went 3-for-5 with a double and a homer, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI to lead the Nationals past the White Sox 10-5; Chris Carter drove in all 5 Brewer runs with a pair of homers to defeat the A’s 5-4; the Twins’ Brian Dozier hit a 2-run homer in the 11th for a 6-4 walkoff victory over the Marlins; Zack Greinke of the Diamondbacks threw a 3-hit shutout to beat the Rays 3-0; a pair of Nelson Cruz home runs and 7 shutout innings from Wade Miley were enough for the Mariners to beat the Indians 7-1; Derek Norris’ game-tying homer in the 9th set the stage for Wil Myers’ walkoff single in the Padres 4-3 win over the Braves; the Red Sox rallied for 2 in the 10th off Giants closer Santiago Casilla for a 5-3 win; and Justin Turner hit a walkoff solo homer in the 9th as the Dodgers beat the Rockies 4-3.
