Jon Glaser Goes Big with Neon Joe: Werewolf Hunter
There is funny, there is stupid, there is stupid funny, and then there is Neon Joe: Werewolf Hunter.
The five-episode limited series airing at midnight ET all week was cooked up for Adult Swim by Jon Glaser, the creator and star of Delocated as well as the man behind Late Night with Conan O’Brien characters Dave “Tiny Hands” Gordon, Pubes, and the Wrist Hulk, and it’s definitely on brand for both Adult Swim and its star: really weird, really funny, and really, really dumb.
Glaser, whose comic style has always tended toward presenting totally silly ideas in as understated a manner as possible, is clearly having a blast going completely the other way in the title role, with an exaggerated Louisiana drawl, a ridiculous all-neon yellow wardrobe – sleeveless, of course – an eye patch, and huge claw-shaped facial scars.
As for what the show is about, it’s pretty much right there in the title. Neon Joe is hired by the townspeople of Garrity, Vermont – “B&B Town USA” – to solve their werewolf problem, and absurdity ensues, with Scott Adsit (30 Rock), Steve Little (Eastbound & Down), Stephanie March (Law & Order: SVU), Damian Young (The Comeback) and more joining in the fun.
The story of the show’s creation is an interesting one: on a visit to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to promote the series finale of Delocated, Glaser decided to do something more interesting than a standard panel appearance, so he took a couple of random bits of wardrobe he’d used for other characters and told Fallon that he was “Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter,” with no more thought or ambition behind it than filling a 6-minute talk show slot. Adult Swim saw the spot and asked Glaser to write up a pilot based on the idea, and here we are.
