HBO, AMC Shows Nominated For Golden Globes -- Watch Them On Sling TV

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – awards season! There are a lot of great shows nominated for Sunday’s Golden Globes, but we are partial to the ones you can watch on Sling TV. Here’s a rundown of what’s nominated, what it’s up against, and how you can enjoy the content:

Best Television Series - Drama

Empire, Fox
Game of Thrones, HBO
Mr. Robot, USA

Outlander, Starz

If you’re not yet on the Game of Thrones band-dragon (see what I did there?), it’s not too late! With the much-anticipated season six set to premiere sometime in the spring, you have plenty of time to catch up on all five previously aired seasons on-demand.

Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series - Drama

Jon Hamm - Mad Men, AMC
Rami Malek - Mr. Robot, USA
Wagner Moura - Narcos, Netflix
Bob Odenkirk - Better Call Saul, AMC
Liev Schreiber - Ray Donovan, Showtime

If you’re not caught up on Mad Men, first of all, where have you been? Secondly, you’re out of luck because new episodes are no longer airing. But, it’s not too late for Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul, whose second season is set to premiere February 15th.

Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy

It’s not a surprise to find Veep in the Best Comedy category considering Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been nominated every year at the Globes since 2013 (but has yet to win), however, this is the first year the series as a whole has been nominated for a Globe. It’s definitely worth noting that Louis-Dreyfus, other cast members, and the show have been nominated for and won several Emmys. Silicon Valley is younger than Veep with only two completed seasons to Veep’s four, but it’s more than made its mark in the comedy TV world: it was nominated for an Emmy last year and will grace the Golden Globes with its presence for the first time this year.

Silicon Valley and Veep air back-to-back on Sunday nights and return later this year, but there’s no need to wait that long: the full runs of the two best comedies on TV are both available on HBO on-demand.

Kirsten Dunst - Fargo, FX

Queen Latifah - Bessie, HBO

Some people may know Queen Latifah from her rap career, her talk show, or perhaps her movies, like Last Holiday and Bringing Down The House (a personal fave). Her role as Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago (which she slaaaaayed) earned her both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations back in 2002. Bessie is about blues singer Bessie Smith who found fame in the 1920s, despite being an African-American woman during a less tolerant time.

Idris Elba - Luther, BBC America
Oscar Isaac - Show Me A Hero, HBO
David Oyelowo - Nightingale, HBO
Mark Rylance - Wolf Hall, PBS
Patrick Wilson - Fargo, FX

Oscar Isaac is brilliant in Show Me A Hero – like everything else he does – as a former Yonkers, NY police officer who becomes the youngest mayor of a big city across the nation just as a federal judge orders Yonkers to desegregate public housing or face significant fines.

David Oyelowo, who had his breakout performance last year in the Oscar-nominated Selam, performs just as brilliantly in Nightingale. Oyelowo plays Peter Snowden, a man who has killed his own mother and tries to continue life as though nothing unusual has happened at all. What makes Oyelowo’s performance particularly spectacular is he is alone for the entire movie, yet you don’t find yourself bored or un-entertained but rather entranced and caught up in his character’s undoing.
