EXCLUSIVE: The Magicians Stars Hale Appleman, Summer Bishil Talk Season Two in Fillory
It’s been nine months since fans of The Magicians were left in shock as all of their favorite characters were murdered by the dreaded Beast. For nine months, we’ve wondered if and how they would be magically resurrected for season two. Now, we know for sure the gang is back and (mostly) fully intact.
Don’t forget, season one left everyone in a bit of a tough spot: Quentin (Jason Ralph), Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margo (Summer Bishil) were screwy (pun intended) after getting their emotions back and slept with each other; Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) found them entangled in the morning causing her to break up with Quentin and sleep with Penny (Arjun Gupta); Eliot is still heartbroken after having to kill his lover, Mike, while Margo was away in Ibiza, causing a friction between the two BFFs; Eliot accepted his role as High King of Fillory and agreed to marry the blade maker’s daughter and stay in Fillory forever; Julia (Stella Maeve) joined forces with the Brakebills gang (minus Quentin, who was sucked back to Earth) but ultimately betrayed them when she made a yet-to-be-revealed deal with The Beast (aka Martin Chatwin) after he slaughtered Penny, Eliot, Alice and Margo.
The second season premiere wastes no time picking up where season one left off with Alice, still juiced up with godlike powers, coming back to life and reviving the rest with the exception of Penny’s hands. The crew sets out to find a way to battle the Beast (Charles Mesure) without the knife but for anyone to help them in Fillory, or believe they are kings and queens, they have to find the crowns. After passing the crown-keeper’s 90’s era test – Eliot proves his high holiness by quoting Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing – they crown one another and wipe the slate clean.
Meanwhile on Earth, Julia is still with the Beast as they search for Reynard The Fox, who tempts her with removing her “shade” (basically all the bad stuff that has ever happened to her) to let her power really shine through and open her eyes to what could really be. She declines, but something tells me we haven’t seen the last of her struggle with the shade.
