College Game of The Week: #6 Michigan State at Nebraska

Nov 06, 2015 by Sarah Moffatt

We’ll be the first to admit Michigan State at Nebraska is an unconventional Game of The Week, with one team ranked 6th in the nation with a perfect 8-0 record and the other sunk to the bottom of the Big Ten division at a pitiful 3-6.

But Nebraska is grasping tightly to a 16-game winning streak at home against Michigan State. Though Nebraska may not seem like much of a threat, it’s safe to say the Cornhuskers have been looking forward to this game all season.

Last year, Michigan State beat Nebraska 27-22 at home in a game that came down to the final possession, though Nebraska finished last season 9-4 (5-3), which is leaps and bounds better than where they are currently sitting. They were also off a 5 game win streak and was ranked #19 last year when they met #10 Michigan State in East Lansing.

The Cornhuskers beat the Spartans 24-3 in 2011, which was the last time they defeated a top-ten team; the last time they beat an undefeated team at home was in 1999 against #5 Kansas State, 41-15.

If the Cornhuskers can stand a chance against the Spartans, they’ll have to do a much better job holding onto the ball than last week’s 5 turnovers against Purdue. Plus, Spartan quarterback Connor Cook is 31-3 as a starter and is just 2 touchdown passes away from breaking Kirk Cousins' – now quarterback for the Washington Redskins – college career record of 64 TD passes.
