NCAA Tournament Double Overtime Thriller Drives Nearly 350% Increase In Sling TV Viewership During Game
Can’t stop, won’t stop. Not even an overbearing boss who watches you like a hawk can keep basketball fans from missing a minute of the games. From tipoff to double overtime, Sling TV saw viewership increase during the game by nearly 350 percent in the University of Arkansas – Little Rock upset over Purdue.
Yesterday, Sling TV customers were able to watch all of the games on TNT, TBS and truTV anywhere, whether it was on their laptop at work, mobile devices while on-the-go, or just lounging on the couch. We saw record numbers of you flock to our service to watch the tournament’s first buzzer beater, a number of upsets and, of course, the double overtime thriller.
Here are some of the most interesting viewership trends we noticed from yesterday’s games:
University of Arkansas - Little Rock quickly became the nation’s favorite underdog when they took Purdue into double overtime and won. Sling TV made it easy for fans to jump into the game when it got down to the wire. So when fans saw the game was getting close through social media or sports apps, they could quickly download the app and tune in, even if they didn’t have a Sling TV account set up.
Lower seeds rule. Peak viewership was 36 percent higher when lower seeded teams beat higher seeds.
What’s better than watching the Tournament? The ability to watch it anywhere! Thursday’s viewership was 256% higher than non-tournament days in March.
It ain’t over till it’s over. Viewership jumped nearly 20 percent with 2.2 seconds left in the tournament’s first buzzer beater by Providence.
What work? Average time viewed on PC, Mac and mobile devices, during the first-round of NCAA Tournament, was 585 percent higher than on non-tournament days in March (TNT, TBS, truTV).
